Donhead 1 - 1 Piddlehinton

On a baking hot afternoon Piddle made the long trek to North Dorset to play mid table Donhead United. The team convoy left Dorchester late but utilising the tomtom like navigation skills of Mcghee they arrived with some twenty five minutes to spare. They needn't have bothered as the game was delayed at least fifteen minutes when the ref failed to turn up. There were some rumours that he was watching his beloved Spurs get beaten by Chelsea down the pub, but surely the real reason was Donheads poor organisational skills...

The game started with an injured Donhead player taking up the role of referee, and Piddle dominated from the off looking solid in all departments and playing some nice passing football for a change. It didnt take long for their dominance to tell as an inch perfect through ball from Jeanes found Petford on the right wing. He took one touch past the geriatric Donhead left back and made no mistake in drilling the ball from 12 yards into the roof of the net for his third goal of the season. Piddle should have extended their lead just before half time when another Jeanes through ball found Hargreaves. His curling effort seemed destined for the top corner but the Donhead keeper miraculously extended a hand to palm the ball away. HT 1-0.

Piddle were playing up the slope in the second half but were still dominating procedings, carving out numerous opportunities. On another day Piddle would have scored 7 or 8 but every shot seemed to hit some part of the bulky Donhead keeper, much to the away teams dispair. Several one on one situations occured but each time Piddle failed to convert the chance. If this was a boxing match, surely the ref would've stopped the contest to stop further punishment. But with the score precariously at 1-0 the inevitable happened. A long hopeful punt down field by the Donhead keeper caught Mcghee in two minds at the back as he tried to let the ball run out of play for a goal kick. Unfortunately the ball had other ideas and stopped some 5 yards short, allowing a Donhead player to nip in and square the ball for a simple tap in, with their only shot of the game.

Piddle pushed for the winner but the equaliser seemed to knock the stuffing out of them, and the home team hung on for an undeserved draw. Quite how such a poor Donhead side have amassed so many points this season only sweet baby jesus knows. A very dissapointing result, the Piddle players coming off the field with their heads down as though they had just lost. A few more points will be needed from their last six games to secure Div 3 football at THLS next season.
