Match Report

Crossways 2 - 1 Piddlehinton
After dropping two points in match they so clearly should have won on Saturday, Piddlehinton went into this one trying to go one better and take all 3 points. This was never going to be easy against a strong Crossways team, who look favourites to finish second with their many games in hand, and who had already beaten Piddlehinton twice this season.
Again with 5 first choice players missing through injury or work commitments, Kip was still unable to field his first choice starting eleven, and therefore started with six teenagers but with the organisational skills of McGhee at the back, a lot tighter defensive performance was always on the cards and so it proved.
The first half was a tight affair on a typical end of season hard and bumpy pitch. Piddlehinton started the game well, with Dovell and Jeanes dominatinating the midfield aerial battle, one which they would win throughout the 90 minutes.
The first goal went to the 'Piddle' with a defence splitting pass by Jeanes being converted by a stranger this year in Marc Cutler. The finish was cool, and with the confidence that was so clearly missing against Donhead. Crossways came back strongly though, and had plenty of good possession down their left flank, but though many shots came in towards Bennett's goal, very few troubled him. One testing shot from Crossway's centre back did cannon off the bar, but went safely behind for a goal kick.
The final 15 minutes of the 1st half saw Crossways score twice. Both goals followed good ball retention, which spread the Piddlehinton defence and left the ball striker with to much time to cooly pass the ball into the 'Piddle' net from 25 yards on both occassions. Half Time 2-1
The second half was an even tighter affair. Very few opportunities came either teams ways and possession was shared 50/50. Piddlehinton through Jeanes were always threatening through the middle of the park, and Dovells flick ons should have provided more opportuities than arose.
Crossways failed to create any notable chances, and were restricted to long range efforts, most of which were always going wide.
With limited options on the bench to change the direction of the game, Kip left things as they were, so the game just drifted along with both sides continuing to cancel each other out. The full time whistle came, and though Piddlehinton lost 2-1, the solid defensive performance, and the incredible energetic perormance of Jeanes which was surely one of the finest by any 'Piddle'player in the last ten years, gave hope to the remaining games of the season but also gave regrets in what could have been this season if the first choice eleven had been available not only tonight but week in week out.
