Shaftesbury 3 - 3 Piddlehinton

On a baking hot afternoon Piddle made the long trip to the North Dorset home of Shaftesbury FC. The players couldn't believe their eyes when they arrived and a decent looking stadium greeted them, complete with a roof on the changing room, and hot running water. The pitch itself looked absolutely massive, and there were a few worried faces at the amount of running that would have to be done in the blistering conditions. There was an added bonus though in that the large fencing around the ground stopped the Piddle players having to run after they wayward shots in the warm up. Im happy to report that Petford did manage to clear the 40ft fence with some ease.

The game got off to a slow start as you might expect and it was Shaftesbury that made all the early running. Fielding 3 or 4 players from their reserve team they were playing some nice stuff. Piddle found themself 1 down midway through the half, cant quite remember how but im sure it was a goal of real quality. The second goal came shortly after, a cross from the right eluding no less than 4 Piddle players in the box and the man at the far post volleyed home past a helpless Bennett. HT 2-0.

The home team even provided orange refreshment at half time, surely a mistake as this gave Piddle just enough vitamin C to begin the comeback of the season. Manager Hansford decided drastic action was needed and pushed Jeanes up front with Petford coming into the centre of midfield alongside Dovell. The change reaped immediate rewards as a cross from the right by Dovell was tapped home by Hargreaves in the six yard box. The goal gave Piddle the confidence to start playing some nice passing football, but as is normal with Piddle disaster was round the corner. A high ball into the box wasn't dealt with by Ayles, with shouts of 'The suns in my eyes!' and the Shafts forward nipped in to restore the two goal cushion.

This spurred Piddle on and in particular Jeanes who took it upon himself to run from near the halfway line, beating some shaftesbury players two or three times, and clinically sidefooting home. The game was end to end stuff at this point and either team couldve scored again, luckily it was Piddle. Jeanes picked the ball up some 25 yards out and drilled an unstoppable shot which nearly snapped the stanchion in two. Both teams coudlve won it late on, with Dovell shooting straight at the keeper when clean through, and Bennett making a world class save tipping the ball round the post at the death.

A vital point for Piddle which will surely see them retain Div 3 status next season.
