Piddlehinton 1 - 3 Antelope
Report by Jason Mcghee
Well on another hot Saturday afternoon, promotion chasing Antelope travelled to Piddlehinton's fortress that is The Thomas Hardye Leisure Centre. With Piddle on a disastrous run of only one win out of the last fourteen games, they would always be up against it, especially with a plethora of first choice players missing once more.
Down to the bare eleven, it was a good job that Piddle's classy centre back McGhee seems to have put his injury ravaged years behind him, and was once again available - his fourth 90mins in a row - a new personal best in a Piddlehinton shirt! Piddle started very slowly, and were always second best in a one sided first half. Antelope dominated possession, won every 50/50 and continually swarmed all over Piddle's stretched defence. Antelope were creating chances down both flanks and also through the middle and after about 25mins, an attack down Piddle's right flank brought their first goal. The winger skilfully beat the stand in Foxwell at right back before drawing Churchill over, and then placed the ball across the inside of Piddle's stand in left back Crate, where the advancing Antelope striker cooly finished. Piddle responded relatively well, with Hargreaves receiving a couple of half chances, and there were a couple of long speculative but close efforts from Dovell and Petford.
Unfortunately Antelope stepped up a gear and produced two late first half goals, but Piddle's defending as a team could be questioned on both.
The two efforts started from the middle of the park, over to the left wing before a lack of serious challenges resulted in to much time and space, and some easy tap ins. Half Time 0-3
Piddle went out in the second half determined to give a better, more competitive performance. A slight tactical change saw Jeanes drop a little deeper into midfield, with Petford and Foxwell swapping positions. Antelope continued to have good possession, but Piddle seemed a lot tighter all over the park and were winning much more possession.
With few chance to note, after 70 mins came what could have been a turning point for Piddle. A corner was won with Hansford going over to the left hand side to take. Churchill told McGhee to leave his defensive spot and push into the area to try and rescue a goal back, and boy that is what he did............
The Antelope should have been wary, because the last time McGhee probably went up for a corner, was pre-season 2005-2006, and on that occasion against Maiden Newton, he bagged himself a brace from two corners in only 45 minutes of action.
This guy really is a 'Fox in the Box', and maximises any chance going. Kip if ever stuck for a striker could not choose a better stand-in than the dependable McGhee.
Well Hansford swung the corner over, but as he was doing so, McGhee performed a quick turn of foot to lose his marker. He quickly stepped forward before moving round the back of the keeper, and then came back in front to steal a yard of space. The corner found him beautifully and rising like a salmon, planted a bullet header from 6 yards in to the top corner. It really was a cracking goal, one which the referee called 'a good goal' after the final whistle.
This should have stirred Piddle on, and though McGhee came forward a couple more times, looking dangerous on both occasions, the game petered out to a 1-3 finish
