Match Report

Upwey 3 - 1 Piddlehinton

Match Report by Ben Jeanes

Piddle's season ended with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of league champions Upwey. On a hard redlands pitch and a gale force wind to contend with Piddle got off to the worst possible start when a seemingly harmless through ball was, as so often this season not cleared but instead sliced into the path of Upweys 8 foot striker and rifled it into the back of the net giving Bennett no chance. This could have started a rout but Piddle started playing good football with some neat crisp passing which has not been seen since the glory days of the 70's, and put Upwey under good pressure with Dovell defending from the front and Piddle's 5 man midfield not giving them any time to settle. Piddle's break through came when the ball was smashed against an upweys defenders hand from fully 2 yards and to everyone's astonishment the Beckham look-alike referee gave a spot kick! Hargreaves stepped up, gave the keeper the eyes and coolly scuffed it down the middle giving the 20 stone keeper no chance! HT 1-1.

A half time team talk telling Piddle to switch on from the off once again fell on deaf ears, as straight from the kick off, from what seemed like a harmless ball down the line somehow caught out Churchill and Rose who were chatting about where they are going on their summer holidays, and the nippy Upwey winger stole in and gave bennett no chance smashing the ball into the top corner. Piddle could have collapsed at this point but they showed fighting spirit that had been missing from the other 25 games this season and put Upwey under good pressure. Kip then played his trump card and bought Jason 'The Whippet' Mcghee on to partner Dovell up front, and also we saw the return of Mike Smith returning from his quadruple knee fracture that would have spelt the end of a career for a lesser man! Piddle continued to press but could not make the breakthrough. The killer goal came a minute from time when a free kick from the right eluded everyone except for the Upwey midfielder who headed in from 6 yards to give Upwey an undeserved victory. All in all a good display from the mighty Piddle, with Hargreaves especially excelling in his right midfield role. If Piddle had showed this kind of commitment against the crap teams in the league they would have found themselves much higher in the table.
