Piddlehinton 6 - 0 Maiden Newton

After a promising pre-season campaign which included wins over Wool (3-2), Piddletrenthide (5-3), and Owermoigne (6-1) expectations were high at the Thomas Hardye Leisure Centre for the first game of Piddle's 60th Year 07/08 Season. The core of the Piddle squad remained from last season, along with two big money additions in the form of striker Jason Bushnell and midfielder Jon Frampton, both from Winfrith.

In their brand spanking new kit the game got off to a frantic start and it took Piddle a while to settle down. With livewire striker Bushnell linking well with last seasons top scorer Hargreaves up front the home team always looked dangerous. New boy Frampton opened the scoring when a Hansford corner was dropped by the Maiden Newton keeper, and he volleyed home.

Piddle soon doubled their advantage when a Petford long throw found Sturmey unmarked at the far post to score his first league goal in 37 years... Maiden Newton were enjoying large spells of posession but it was Piddle that looked the more dangerous, with the Maiden Newton keeper the much busier of the men between the sticks. Bennett did pick the ball out of the net when a long throw found its way through a crowd of players into the net, but the goal was ruled out as nobody had touched it. Piddle made it 3-0 before half time when Jeanes calmly sloted home from inside the area. HT 3-0.

Piddle started the second half well and dominated play. Bushnell scored his first league goal for the club after a surging run, and soon after Jeanes added his second with a long range effort from outside the box. Dovell wrapped up the scoring when his powerful header was kept out by the overworked Maden Newton keeper and he lashed the rebound into the roof of the net.

Bennett made an outstanding save in the dying stages to tip over a long range effort which was destined for the top corner. The Piddle defence held firm for their first, and hopefully not last, clean sheet of the season. A great start for the new management team of Hansford, Jeanes and Mcghee.
