Match Report

Piddlehinton 5 - 4 Donhead
Piddlehinton rocked up to the THLS bouyed by last weeks excellent result against Harbour View and expecting an easy game against bottom of the table Donhead. The reality was very different... Piddle started the game with the same 11 that ended last week against the Harbourmen, in what manager Hansford said was "...the best display by a Piddle team in the last 10 years...", surely the kiss of death!
The game started very scrappily and Piddle were finding it hard against a physical Donhead team who took the lead when a mistake at the back gifted a goal. The home team were back on level terms when Jeanes powered in a bullet header from a Hansford corner, which almost broke the post as it cannoned into the back of the net. Some slack defending allowed Donhead to take the lead into the half time break. HT 1-2.
Piddle made a couple of changes at the interval with Dovell and Rose being introduced to the action. The games was still very scrappy and it is difficult to remember 3 or 4 passes being strung together, with both teams resorting to the long ball game. Bushnell made the scores all square when a bouncing ball left the Donhead keeper in no mans land and the Piddle hitman nodded into the unguarded net. Piddle deservedly took the lead when last seasons top scorer Hargreaves scored a rare goal with his head. However, almost immediately Donhead equalised against the run of play.
The home team retook the lead when Jeanes ran onto a through ball and cooly lobbed the advancing keeper. Again Piddle threw away the lead almost immediately when confusion at the back led to the Donhead forward drilling home off the post. Piddle were wasting plenty of chances and it looked liked they would have to settle for a point, especially when striker Bushnell pulled up with a hamstring injury, unfortunately all the subs had been used so he was forced to struggle on. Piddle were glad he did as he popped up at the far post to slide in the winning goal in the dying seconds. A welcome three points from a very poor performance.
