Maiden Newton 4 - 1 Piddlehinton

Looking for their 4th straight win, Piddle travelled to Maiden Newton & Cattistock full of confidence, and a victory would have put them up to third. Unfortunately things did not go to plan as a Maiden Newton team searching for their first 3 points of the season came out all guns blazing. The first half started with Piddle somewhat off the pace. Maiden Newton were given far to much time on the ball, and though they rarely threatened in the first 45 minutes, Piddle who had the advantage of the wind and slope, failed to create any worthwhile chances. All to often passes were misplaced, or first time flicks gave possession away. These errors came back to haunt Piddle as one of Maiden Newtons rare first half attacks resulted in the opening goal of the game. All to often this season, set pieces have proved Piddle's undoing, and as a corner came in from the right, an opposition player was left with time and space in the box, and as a poor clearance fell to him, he put the ball in despite McGhee's valiant effort. Piddle went in at half time one down, and received the full Kip Hansford hairdryer treatment - deservedly so!

Coming out in the second half, Piddle bucked up their ideas and were a yard quicker all over the pitch. Good possession resulted in a corner from the right, and though anything failed to materialise, when the ball was put back in form the resulting clearance, Mark Ayles was there to hammer the ball into the corner, leaving the keeper no chance. Piddle seemed to be getting on top, but within five minutes a Maden Newton throw in from the left found one of their players totally unmarked six yards out, and he had time to hammer the ball home on the volley.

From this point on the game started to fade away. A third soon followed for Maiden Newton. This time another corner was headed home at the back post, though McGhee in goal for Piddle would be disappointed with his effort. Jeanes the Piddle captain soon went off injured, as did Churchill but the substitutions failed to inspire Piddle for the last 20mins. The failure to create any notable chances was hurting Piddle dear, and despite some strong Dovell runs from midfield and some speculative free kick attempts from Petford and Southern, Piddle never really looked like getting back into it. A 4th for Maiden Newton killed the game off. This time it was a well placed shot from 20yds which followed another poor clearance. All in all a game to forget for Piddle.
