Piddlehinton 3 - 2 Sturminster Newton

Piddlehinton looked to bounce back from the dissapointing last minute defeat against Maiden Newton with only their second game since the beginning of December.

With Matt Prowse out injured with a calf strain Geordie Paul Henderson came back into centre midifeld to partner Dovell. Mark Ayles was also back replacing Mcghee in the centre of defence.

Piddle started brightly and were creating plenty of chances but just failing to apply the finishing touch. The breakthrough came half way through the first half when a Jeanes cross found its way to Bushnell in the box who volleyed powerfully into the roof of the net from 12 yards.

Piddle were looking vulnerable to set pieces against the tall sturminster newton side and it was from a corner the North Dorset side drew level. Bennett had already produced an excellent save to keep the scores level at the previous corner, but could do little to stop a powerful header from the centre of the goal as the tallest man on the pitch nodded home completely unmarked. HT 1-1

Piddle started the second half strongly determined not to regret the missed chances of the first half. For all their posession and pressure they were sturggling to find a way through with time running out.

With about 15 minutes to go and just as the home crowd was getting restless, Jeanes picked up the ball 20 yards from goal, and smashed a left foot screamer that flew past the Sturminster keeper before he even saw it! This seemed to settle Piddles nerves and Jeanes soom added a third skillfully beating his man before deftly chipping the on rushing keeper.

Sturminster were resorting to the long ball tactic in desperation, and it was a ball over the top that caught the home defence flat footed. The initial strike was well saved by Bennett but the rebound fell straight to the feet of the Sturs striker who poked home into the open net.

This led to a very nervous last 5 minutes for the home team but they managed to hold on for all 3 points despite Sturminster hitting the post in the dying stages.
