Match Report

Piddlehinton 1 - 2 Witchampton
Piddlehinton produced probably their best performance of the season so far and were unlucky to come out of the game with nothing. After last weeks debacle at Chickerell, Piddle switched to a 4-5-1 formation with Ben Jeanes dropping into midfield. There were also first starts of the season for full backs Luke Notley and Ben Rose.
Piddle started brightly and were playing some good football, putting together more passes in the opening 10 minutes than they did in all of last weeks game. The match was evenly poised when Witchampton took the lead, a cross from the right wasn't cleared properly and a Witchampton player was on hand to stroke the ball home from just inside the penalty box leaving Southern in the Piddle goal no chance. Piddlehinton got back on level terms after some neat build up play, a deep cross was cleared to the edge of the box and Ben Jeanes volleyed spectacularly home for the equaliser. The Piddle defence was looking as solid as they have all season, well marshalled by Ayles and Minhinnick. HT 1-1
The second half continued as the first with both teams playing some neat passing football, but not being able to produce any real clear cut chances. Wicthampton retook the lead mid way through the half from what has been Piddle's achilles heel this season - a corner. The ball was seemingly cleared as Dovell again won a header in the box, but it fell to the Witchampton Number 7 wide on the left who volleyed in from the acutist of angles.
Piddle manager Derek Hansford responded by switching to two up front and bringing on some fresh legs in the form of Crane, Cutler, and Churchill. Crane almost made an immediate impression when he beat two men and cut dangerously inside the box, but his driven shot went narrowly wide. Piddle went close again when a free kick was flicked on by Ayles and Hargreaves resulting shot was fingertipped onto the post by the keeper. The home team continued to press with Witchampton taking off a striker and switching to five at the back to try and kill off the game. Piddle won a free kick in a central position late on but Crane's flighted effort flew just over the bar.
A dissapointing result, in a game where Piddle could of taken three points, but the performace will give the team confidence next week as they face unbeaten Crossways in the cup.
