Piddlehinton 1 - 3 Crossways
Piddlehinton exit the Dorset Junior Cup at round 2 with a 3-1 defeat by Crossways, despite yet another excellent team performance. If Piddle had been more clinical in front of goal it may well have been a different story.
Piddle Manager Derek Hansford reverted back to a 4-4-2 formation after last weeks experimentation with 4-5-1, with Ben Jeanes reverting back to his normal position up front along side Kyle Hargreaves. Only one change was made from the team last week with Stuart Crane coming into midfield replacing Mike Smith who was unavailable. The two young full backs Rose and Notely retained their places in the starting eleven after solid performances last week. Southern was again deputising between the sticks.
It was Piddle who were on top in the opening exchanges with some good chances created but no end product to show. The home team were looking the more likely to score but it was Crossways who opened the scoring mid way through the first half. A break down the right was fed to the lively Beasley on the byline, he cut back inside past Rose who's challenge took the crossways striker down in the box. The ref had no hesitation in pointing to the spot, and it was Beasley who stepped up to convert the kick blasting home. Piddle had a couple of shouts for penalties of their own for handball in the box but the referee waved away the claims. Both Jeanes and Hargreaves had half chances in the box but could not convert. HT 0-1.
Piddle started the second half strongly and were soon back on level terms. Petford fed Jeanes down the right wing, and his cross was handled in the box, it was third time lucky as the ref pointed to the spot. Hargreaves, taking over penalty duty from Dovell after his miss at chickerell, cooly slotted home with the keeper motionless. Crossways started to exert pressure and were looking dangerous on the counter attack, when they eventually retook the lead. A move down the left flank found a Crossways striker with acres of space in the box and his powerful drive could only be parried by Southern into the net. The impetous then switched to Piddle with Jeanes looking dangerous up front, picking up a mis-hit shot from Petford and volleying first time against the bar with the keeper well beaten. Hargreaves then had a simple chance to make it 2-2 when a quality Crane cross picked out Jeanes, and his deft header found Hargreaves all alone in the box. The normally deadly front man completely missed his kick with the goal gaping.
Crossways then made the game safe when a defensive mix up caused Southern in the Piddle goal to mis-hit his clearance and a Crossways striker was on hand to tap home from a yard out. Piddle piled on the pressure late on, with Jeanes again rifling a shot against the Crossways bar but they couldn't find a way through. Piddlehinton now have a week off to reflect on their cup exit, returning to action on the 18th at home to Donhead United.
