Mark Ayles Interview
It's Maiden Newton 1, Piddlehinton 0, and Piddle are struggling to see a way back into the game. Following yet another hopeful punt down the line from midfield, Mike "The Manc" Smith gave chase as their defender tried to shepherd the ball out for a goal kick. Despite a weight difference of 13 stone, Mike lived up to his £23 price tag and managed to out-wrestle the left back and cut the ball back into the box blindly in the hope that it would reach a Piddlehinton player. Ayles' years of experience and astute footballing brain found him in the right place at the right time. With plenty of work still to do, he held off an army of defenders, composed himself and unleashed a truly unstoppable drive across the goal which was clocked at 128mph as it cannoned into the top corner of the net. As the crowd went wild (Bill, back from his wander around the village and Derek "Hairdryer" Hansford), Ayles didn't have a clue how to celebrate scoring a goal as it never happens, so resorted to that old classic, throwing your arms in the air randomly. They do it on Match of the Day sometimes. Dodgy celebrations aside, the scores were level at 1-1 and Piddle were back in the hunt. Maiden Newton forced a throw-in 2 minutes later, and as the long throw came into the box, Ayles attacked the ball but missed, somehow, by about 3 feet, allowing a Maiden Newton player to scuff the ball home from 2 yards. The mistake spurred Maiden Newton on to victory. Let's not forget it was a cracking goal though. That's the important thing. Top corner.
